Nature Poem

The shutter of the tractor,
along the narrow grassy path.

A whisper in the wind,
the chirping and croaking.

The smell of luscious environment,
thick grass knee high.

I felt the moist soil,
as we bring a shrub to life.

Icy water slips down the rocks,
as it falls into the stream.

The trees are as tall as buildings
sky high in the city.

I can see the ecosystem coming to life.
The old shuttering tractor,

taking us among the narrow grassy path;

as we take in the beautiful sight.

In the Trenches

On Thursday, June 16, our class went to Tillsonburg to visit Robin Barker-James’ farm. While we were there we got to experience fighting in trenches. The trenches were representing the WW1 1914 trenches that soldiers fought in, over in Flanders Fields, Belgium.  While being there we also go to learn about how to bayonet which is when two people fight head on. Some of the different moves included the parry right, left and middle, thrust, butt stroke, and neck jab. Our class had played a game near the the end of the day, the girls were the Canadians, and the boys were the Germans. The Canadians traveled through the trenches as the Germans hid among the side, trying to defeat the Canadians.

“We already need a new bomber? This is such chaos! We won’t be able to make it. I wish I could just take my helmet off the pain of it digging into my head kills. This is so gross, I am sweating so much. There is sand in my hair it feels dirty, I feel dirty.  This is the moment when I wish we were back together at the barn.”

Going to Robin Barker-James’ farm help me learn that the war definitely was not a game.  When we were down in the trenches it was actually scary, but what we were experiencing wasn’t half as bad as the real trenches in the war.  I also learned that we need to work together as a team to survive. Overall I think that Robin Barker-James’ was a great guy who wants to keep the memories of those who fought for us alive.

Magical Kitties

Follow along as the steps to magical kitties, are  revealed as a tessellation.

Materials
-Card Stock Hexagon
-Ruler
-Scissors
-Tape
-Goop Paper 45 x 30
-Pencil Crayons  (any colour)
-Marker (black to outline)

Steps
1)Start with a card stock hexagon.
2)Next draw a face like line from the top left to top right.
3)Cut out that line. Slide the cutout to the bottom of the hexagon. Tape it in place                        carefully.
4)On another side draw a jagged line.
5)Carefully cut it out and slide it directly to the opposite side.
6)Tape it so that it is secure.
7)On the last side draw a squiggly line.
8)Cut it out, and slide to the opposite side.
9)Tape it in place.
10) Now that the shape is made place it in the middle of the paper and trace around it.
11)Once that is done, rotate the shape so it fits in place somewhat like a puzzle, then continue filling up the page with the tessellation.
12)In the center of the tessellation add a cat like face, fill in the rest of the room with colour, make it unique and interesting.

Some Helpful Hints
While cutting out the tessellation, be very careful; the neater it is the better it is to tessellate.  When drawing the tessellation down on paper, make sure you start in the middle and go from there; it’s easier to fill up the page that way. Last but not least, when tracing the tessellation down onto the good copy paper, be sure that it is carefully put together for the best results.
Now that the wonderful Magical Kitty tessellation art is finished, post it somewhere where everyone can see how amazing it really is.

Anorexia

Anorexia is when people starve themselves or limit the amount of food they eat to lose weight.  People who have anorexia try and stay between 500-800 calories a day. They mostly drink just water, and sometimes tea. They try to only eat one little meal a day, normally dinner so that they aren’t tempted to eat, during the day. Limit their appetite by smoking. Also when they feel the urge to eat, drinking many glasses of water can make your body think that it’s full.  Check out my Glogster for more information on anorexia, and life changing story of a 10 year old boy who had anorexia.  Habacuc_1988

The Word Shaker

The Idea Hive has recently been doing a shared reading on the book The Book Thief. In the book Max writes a story for Liesel. Our classes were divided up into 11 groups, we had to work together using the pictures to determine what the story is about. My group was Dylan, Heaven, Austin and I. This is what we thought the story represented.

People are trying to be more like Hitler, thinking that it will make them a more powerful person. This is what the Nazis need to survive and that it is what they are made up of.  They are made up of hatred, and the swastikas represent who they are.

Hitler wants the Nazis to believe that they are doing the right thing in the war and  that killing Jewish people is good and right. He is brain washing them into thinking it’s all about the power and land not about rights of people.

Liesel is holding a seed in her hand, the seed of hope. The seed that Liesel is holding is so small because they have little hope. She will plant the seed of hope and it will blossom into hope for the Jews.

Liesel is a little tree in a forest trying to grow into a strong tree, but the words of hatred surround her. Which is making it hard to grow normally.

As the Nazis try to chop down the tree of hope, the tree is so strong that it won’t break down; all though it sheds tears.

Liesel is being sheltered by the tree of hope just like they sheltered Max in there basement from the Nazis. when someone dies and there hope is lost the tree sheds a leave.

Max is pulling out tools to help Liesel rebuild her hope. Max is trying to rebuild what the Nazis were trying to destroy.

Max is climbing the tree to find hope in the Nazi world. He wants to be with Liesel and have hope like her too. He would do anything to have that kind of hope and innocents in his life.

Max has found Liesel and is greeting her. He tells her that he is going to help her build hope for her and the rest of the world.

The hope of the people is so big and strong that they are over tanking the Nazi’s with hope. Hope is so strong that is way bigger then the trees of hatred and fear. The hope and friendship of Liesel and Max allows the tree to grow so much bigger then the other trees.

Every ones individual hope is coming together to make a forest of hope instead of a forest of hatred and those tears were seeds. They are walking safely through the forest of hope.

Would you Suffer Your Life for Loved Ones?

In the book The Book Thief there are many examples of conflict. One example is internal: character vs self. The protagonist is Rudy and the antagonist is also Rudy. There are reasons why Rudy feels guilt. One day two men show up at the Steiner’s house, wanting to take Rudy away to a special school although his parents turn down the offer. A few days later there is a letter in the mail, saying that Alex Steiner must go to war in Russia. Rudy feels like it his his fault that his dad is in the war, because he wouldn’t go to the school. Rudy attempts to go find his dad but then realizes that it’s hopeless. I think that Rudy is going to join the war in hope of finding his dad so that he will feel better about not going to the school.

Stp243

A second example is external: character verses character. The protagonist is Hans and the antagonist is Max. In the book there is conflict between Max and Hans. Max hides in the Huberman basement to be protected from the Nazis. One day Hans  gives a Jew a piece of bread, which caused him to be called a “Jew Lover”. I thought that the Nazis were going to search the house right away because they might of suspected that Hans was helping more Jews. I think that nobody will trust Hans anymore because he gave the Jew bread, and helped Max. Instead Max was able to get away safety.

Autiscy

Another example is external: character vs society. The protagonist is Max and the antagonist is the Nazis. In the book there is conflict between Max and the Nazi party. The Nazi party is out to find all the hidden Jews, they go through every house searching all the rooms. When Max is in the Huberman’s basement he is able to hid from the Nazi searching for him. Max leaves going out into the open where anything can happen to him, because he can’t feel safe in the Huberman household. At the time I was scared for Max because I thought that he was going to get caught. I was really releaved that he was able to escape safely.

Maitland Valley Watershed: Beach Inspections

Maitland Valley Watershed Health Unit beach water inspections. The Health Unit samples the water for E.coli only. But by the time the whole process is done the water status could have already changed, so they only test the water every five years. A watershed is a area of water that drains into a common location.

The problem with beaches are that the water can change at any moment. Just because there are no signs up saying that the water may be dangerous doesn’t mean that its completely safe. The water may have clues to if you should be swimming in it.

If you can see your feet clearly at waist depth of an adult, that means that the water is safe. You shouldn’t swim in water that is cloudy because of waves or because of run off after a large amount of rainfall. Huron County Health Unit only test water for traces of E.coli; it takes at least 24 hours to get the E.coli level results back. By that time the water may have changed from safe to unsafe. There are eight of fourteen swimming locations in Huron County that the Health Unit doesn’t sample. Those places have a warning sign because the water quality can change at any moment.

A good watershed means that there will be clean drinking water, habitat for wildlife, and a water supply for both business and agriculture uses. This also means that it can be used in spare time for canoeing, fishing, hiking, and swimming. The ecosystem has lakes, rivers, wetlands, streams, and forests. The water flows from the Maitland River to Lake Huron. Both ground water, and surface water can easily be contaminated by pollutions.

When the water is found to be dangerous, and shouldn’t be swam in the Medical Officers come and put up a sign informing that the water isn’t safe. The water might be at risk from bacteria, E.coli, or just the quality of the water.

Rosa Hubermann

“You sumensch; you expect her to read a book”! Meet Rosa Hubermann. She is a character out of the book “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. This book takes place in Nazi, Germany.  Rosa shows no sympathy for anybody, so don’t even waste your time.

I would describe Rosa as strict. I know this because when Liesel had spent the money from doing laundry, Rosa quickly got a wooden spoon, and hit her with it before Liesel got a chance to explain what happened. I think Rosa did this because she thinks that Liesel’s real mother is diseased. I don’t think this is fair at all. Rosa hit Liesel twice then said sorry just like that not even really meaning it.

Rosa is also vulgar she tends to take her anger out on other people; mostly on Liesel. Rosa shows her anger by saying bad words. I think that Rosa is so vulgar because when she was a girl she was abused.

Rosa is hard working. Rosa doesn’t think too highly of her customers “those rich people are just plain lazy”. Rosa does laundry for a job, with the help of Liesel sometimes. I would say that Rosa acts nice to her customers up closer, so that she can get paid good. As soon as the door shuts Rosa starts talking about how lazy rich people are.

Rosa is also loving. Rosa took Liesel in as her own child. I think that Rosa adopted Liesel so that she could give the love that she might not have gotten when she was a child.

When Rosa always says things about the rich people who are too lazy to do their own laundry  It reminded me the show Mr. Bean. Where he is trying to watch a Christmas movie on t.v. on Christmas eve. Carolers kept coming to his door as soon as they left Mr. Bean would get mad, and start to say things about them.

In my opinion I think that Markus put Rosa in the book because Rosa makes the book more humorous, and it really shows that back in the olden days that parents really would be able to hit you with a wooden spoon. Compared to now where that counts as child abuse.

It could be possible that Rosa is jealous that Hans and Liesel are spending so much time together. Every night Hans, and Liesel practice reading together. I wonder if it ever makes Rosa feel left out?  Maybe Rosa is so mean because Hans is teaching Liesel how to read not Rosa.

I wonder if Rosa is going to one day find one of the books that Liesel has stolen, or if Liesel tells her. I wonder if Rosa is going to find out that Liesel steals books, and what will she do to Liesel? What do you predict will happen next?
